The Institute of Social Research and Cultural Studies (SRCS) was established in 2002, offering both MA and PhD programs. With faculty members from diverse backgrounds including social and political theory, cultural history, literary studies, cinema and media studies, SRCS transcends conventional disciplinary boundaries and structures courses in four clusters: social and cultural theory, Taiwan and Inter-Asia studies, art, media and society, and digital cultural studies. The objectives of SRCS are to equip students with the capacity of critical thinking and the necessary skills to conduct research on historical, social and cultural phenomena and issues in Taiwan as well as in other societies.

For PhD program, the Institute of Social Research and Cultural Studies offers two groups: “Social Research and Cultural Studies” and “Inter-Asia Culture Studies,” working collaboratively within four focal research clusters from across the UST universities, i.e., National Chiao Tung University, National Tsing Hua University, National Central University, National Yang Ming University. IACS promotes the use of inter-Asian cultural connections as a novel framework for approaching world history and global cultures.
The Institute provides practical, cultural cooperation with the international academic environment to help students develop international perspectives in the process of academic exchanges.
